I Aim To Misbehave

I started re-watching old episodes of Gilmore Girls a little while ago, & I recently realized that Rory & Lorelai are actually really judgmental, pretentious, & if I may be so frank, condescending assholes. They always put down other people based on what they like to listen to or read or watch & seem to pride themselves on what they think are unusual or unique tastes.

If it weren’t for the fabulous supporting cast, their high & mighty attitudes would make the show unwatchable.

I have a theory that Rory and Lorelai are the original hipsters. Every indie kid should take note, that this show is the origin of your lifestyle! Haha.

Watching this show when I was in 5th and 6th grade, I was introduced to music and movies I otherwise would not have known, and I think that really shaped the way I percieved things as I got older. I agree that they do possess those qualities, but I don’t think it creates a negative effect for the show.

These aspects of Lorelai and Rory’s personalities makes me wonder why they are that way. Obviously we all know the luxurious world Lorelai was raised in, and her distaste for that way of living. I think that had a direct result in Lorelai’s own judgemental attitude, just in reverse of her parents. It’s a rebellion that she never outgrew, and which she passed on to Rory, along with her quirky taste in books and music. I think because Rory was much more cultured and well-read at such a young age, it prevented her from relating to her peers, which again contributes to her own pretentiousness.

But the fact that I can sit here and analyze all of these not-so-great qualities of the Gilmore Girls shows how dynamic and well-written these characters are. So I disagree that they’re attitudes make the show “unwatchable.” To me, the fact that they aren’t perfect makes it all the more interesting.

I agree that they do have a degree of condescension about them, but overall I don’t think they’re very pretentious, and they’re certainly not hard to tolerate (though this opinion may to some degree be because I act just like them).  I think that they’re intelligent and opinionated people who aren’t afraid of making their opinions known.  I admire them for their wit and don’t find it the least bit annoying.  My mom and I often have very similar conversations among ourselves.  I don’t think that makes them, or us, that “high and mighty.”  Everyone makes fun of what they don’t like.
